4 Ways to Play Bossa Nova on Ukulele
Free PDF:
www.thetinman.co/bossa-nova-strumming
Rhythm is essential to playing Brazilian bossa nova and in this lesson we look at four right hand techniques to capture the groove. Sure we could pluck the notes just a like a guitar, and it sure sounds great especially on Low G, but how can we accomplish these rhythms utilizing the ukulele to its full potential?
For those of us that strum we can take a page out of the cavaquinho playbook and use the techniques of George Formby or maybe a more gentle thumb and index finger strum both giving us quite different strumming patterns. We can even add percussion much as the great Ohta-San does with his Tick-Tock strum.

FORMIDABLE LESSON thank u so much :)
💎
Very cool. Growing up in the UK in the sixties I thought the fan stroke was the way all ukuleles were played as George Formby and Tessie O’ Shea were on the television all the time, just fan stroking every song they sang. It is a great way to accompany a song though. 🪕🇬🇧
Ótimo! Parabéns
Everything looks so easy when you do it. But okay, I‘ll give this technique another try…
Nice! 👍
Thanks. Is it still meant to be in "straight" timing? Like that you get 6 eight notes out of the two fans and the remaining 2 eight notes from the down up?
Yup! All straight eighths and since it’s a DDU pattern you can use it during a split stroke as well. You of course could also do it as an eighth note triplet in place of a thumb roll triple
@@Banjoleletinman ❤️
Great job on this. Terrific song very well explained. Thanks a lot!
❤loved it❤️great entertainment while learning❤still smiling and loving it❤

👋👋👋
this is insane, wtf...... it's so smooth that it looks edited, that's actually super impressive dude
This is easy bro
@@pepeisaratupload a video with you doin it then lil bro
Beautiful! Thanks.
Really love this lesson ! I like how you are extending the ukulele into other areas. Thank you!
Respect for the HOURS in the shed getting that worked out. 🫡
Just bought a Banjolele I will be spending a lot of time on this video thanks sir!
I’m curious, what exactly is your technique in the different percussive hits with the left hand? It sounds absolutely amazing and gives off a very Bossa Nova feel!!
You nailed it! This is one I stole from the great Herb Ohta who would use it to comp bossa nova tunes. I break it down towards the end of this video: 4 Ways to Play Bossa Nova on Ukulele ruclips.net/video/BeDrHzfQW_A/видео.html
What a fun lesson, Christopher! And taught so masterfully 😊
Excellent and valuable lesson. A big thank you, Christopher.
Extended range baritone ukulele 😂😂😂😂❤
Awesome. Great explaining! Thank you very much. ❤
Great, Christopher, nice presentation, very clear. Worth mentioning that the ukulele / cavaquinho rhythmic patterns (batidas?) are derived from the partido alto part played on the pandeiro, and maybe the tamborim? Also, your thumb is imitating - what else - the big surdo. It's like building a watch. How much of this was sorted out by João Gilberto, do you think?
I love that analogy of building a watch! The amazing part of Gilberto’s guitar playing is how it so perfectly captured each of those instruments in the Samba rhythm section
This is the stuff!
Next time you swing through London we’ll have to give some Jobim tunes a shot!
@@Banjoleletinman oh yes please!
Your talent and teaching are outstanding . . . Bravo!
Great lesson! Looking forward to practicing the percussive techniques.
Thanks! I have some practicing to do on those ones myself :)

Looks like a Bruko #6 ukulele
It is, indeed!
@Banjoleletinman Just wondering what strings are on it, are they a set of your own brand ? (they sound good). I have Worth browns on mine.
@@tjbissues5889 They're Uke Logics that I had a set of laying around but I honestly don't like them at all. I'm really hitting it hard to get a sound out. I'm going to try my strings on the next change as I know a bunch of folks use them on Brukos
@Banjoleletinman Thank you for replying. I am always interested in the strings people use. I enjoy your video's so, thank you for those also.
I notice you are doing this on your FAVORITE ukulele... :0)
Wow 🙀
Great Christopher, one of ny all time favourites (especially Ohta-San's version). Lovely
I"m still here Christopher. Fingernails getting shorter.
New video coming tomorrow to help you with practicing the rhythm even more :)
Hi /Christopher. Boy this stuff is tough but I'm hanging on by my fingernails. Thanks for your patient approach.
Slow and steady; this one certainly takes time! but once you have it a new strum in the toolbox :)
You're a very talented teacher. I like your calmness. Could you please give the time signatures for the split stroke?
That time signature is 4/4 for the whole piece but you can think of the split stroke as a clave rhythm with groupings of 3 and 2. In that case it would be 3+3+2
@@Banjoleletinman so something like that: 1+2+3+4+ DudDudDu And the fast hand movement between the d and D is only possible, because the d is not a full strum but a small hit on the g string?
@@JohannesHeld Yes exactly! The whole pattern is straight eighth notes but feels syncopated because of where the accents are placed due to the partial strums.
@@Banjoleletinman can't wait to grab my ukulele to try this strum. 🤯
i'd love to buy an album of this type of music! :)
Working on it but in the meantime you can grab this whole tune for free: cdavisshannon.bandcamp.com/album/time-after-time
Классно!!!
GREAT
Very inspiring
It's so much more! 😊
Cool 🇬🇧
